Let d be the distance between the centers, and r1 and r2 be the radii of larger and smaller circles. Length of the transverse common tangent is

\√{d^{2}-\ (r_{1}+r_{2} )^{2}}=\√{24^{2}-(5+3)^{2}}

=\√{576-64}=16 \√{2} {cm}
