Two numbers are in the ratio 3 : 5. If 9 be subtracted from each, then they are in the ratio 12 : 23. Find the numbers.

Solution:

(3)Let two numbers be 3x and 5x. So,

\ {3 x-9}/{5 x-9}= {12}/{23}

\⇒ 69 x-207=60 x-108

9 x=99

\⇒ x=11

Therefore, the two numbers are 33and 55.
