Sam Manekshawwas the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 that led to the liberation of Bangladesh in December 1971. The war lasted less than a fortnight and saw more than 90,000 Pakistani soldiers taken prisoner. Popularly known as Sam Bahadur, he was the first Indian Army officer to receive the rank of field marshal.
