A cricketer has completed 20 innings and his average is 44.5 runs. How many runs must he make in the next inning so as to raise his average to 45?

Solution:

The average in 21 innings is 45.
Hence, total runs

= 21 × 45 = 9 45

The average in 20 innings is 44.5.
Hence, total runs

= 20 ×44.5 = 8 9 0

Required run

= 21 ×45 - 20 × 44.5

= 9 45 - 8 9 0 = 55
