x^2 + ax + b

is a perfect square, then which one of the following relations between a and b is true?

Solution:

A normal perfect square equation is something like this,

(x + y)^2 = x^2 + 2xy + y^2

On comparing

x^2 + 2xy + y^2

with

x^2 + ax + b,

we get:
a = 2y and

b = y^2

a^2 = 4y^2

which is equal to 4b
Hence,

a^2 = 4b
