Colin Mackenzie was appointed as the first Surveyor General of India in 1815. He was the Scottish army officer in the British East India Company. He was a collector of antiquities and an orientalist. He travelled southern India, initially for personal reasons and subsequently as a surveyor, using local translators and intellectuals to examine religion, oral histories, inscriptions and other data.
