Proteins are assembled from 20 amino acids. Amino acids are building blocks of the protein. The key elements of an amino acid are carbon (C), hydrogen $\left(\mathrm{H}\right)$, oxygen $\left(\mathrm{O}\right)$ and nitrogen (N). Proteins perform a vast array of functions within organisms, including catalysing metabolic reactions, DNA replication, responding to stimuli, providing structure to cells and organisms and transporting molecules from one location to another.
