The following table shows the number of children in each house of a society.

What is the average number of children per house?

Solution:

Total number of houses = 7 + 11 + 15 + 5 = 38
Total children =

(0 × 7) + (1 × 11)

+ (2 × 15) + (3 × 5)

= 11 + 30 + 15 = 56
∴ Average number of children per house

=56/38=1.47
