If 4x + 5y = 83 and 3x : 2y = 21 : 22, then (y – x) equals

Solution:

{3 x}/{2 y}= {21}/{22}

⇒{x}/{y}= {21}/{22} ×{2}/{3}= {7}/{11}

⇒{x}/{7}= {y}/{11}=k

∴ 4 x+5 y=83

⇒ 4 × 7 k+5× 11 k=83

⇒ 28 k+55 k=83

⇒ 83 k=83 ⇒ k=1

∴ x=7, y=11

∴ y-x=11-7=4
