Solution:

(4) Let the required distance be x km.
Time = 2 hours 20 minutes

= 2 1/ 3

According to the question,

x /12 + x/ 9 = 7 /3

{ 3 x + 4 x }/ { 36 } = { 7 } /{ 3 }

⇒

{7x}/ 36 = 7/ 3

⇒

x = 7/ 3 × 36 /7 = 12
