Solution:

(4) Speed of boat in still water = x kmph (let)
Speed of current = y kmph
Rate downstream = (x + y) kmph
Rate upstream = (x – y) kmph
Distance = Speed × Time
∴

(x – y) × 2t = (x + y) × t

⇒ 2x – 2y = x + y

⇒ 2x – x = 2y + y ⇒ x = 3y

⇒{x}/{y}= {3}/{1}
