Two parallel chords are on the one side of the centre of circle having length 24 cm and 32 cm. If the distance between the chord is 8 cm, then find the area of the circle?

Validate

Solution:

In ΔOAD

r ^2 = 16^2 + x ^2

....(i)
and in ΔOCB

r^ 2 = (x + 8)^2 + 12^2

....(ii)
From (i) and (ii)

256 + x^2 = x^2 + 64 + 16x + 144

⇒

256 - 144 = 16(x + 4)

⇒

x + 4 = 7

⇒ x = 3 cm
In ΔOAD,

r ^2 = 3^2 + 16^2 = 265

∴ Area of circle

= πr^ 2 = 265π
