Find area of quadrilateral ABCD below shown as a shaded region in given figure, if out of the three squares the middle one (viz. square BHDF) has an area of 36 units

Solution:

Let side of square AEFG be 'a' & side of square HICJ be'b'
So,
Area quad ABCD

= a^2 + 36 + b^2 +{b×(6-b) }/2

-{a×(a+6)}/2-{a×(a-6)}/2-{ b×(b+6)}/2

= a^2 + 36 + b^2+{6b}/2-b^2/2-a^2/2

-{6a}/2-a^2/2+{6a}/2-b^2/2-{6b}/2

= 36\ \units^2
