A person can row a distance of 8km upstream in 1 hr and can row back to the starting point in just 40 minutes. How much time (in hour) will he take to row 25km in still water?

8/{x-y}=1

⇒x-y=8

8/{x+y}=2/3

⇒x+y=12

Solving (i) and (ii)

x = 10

y = 2

Required time =

25/10

= 2.5 hrs
