Subhash Chandra Bose was elected Congress President in 1938 and 1939. At the end of his first term, the presidential election to the Tripuri Congress session took place early in 1939. Netaji was re - elected by defeating Dr Pattabhi Sitaramayaa who had been backed by the Mahatma Gandhi and the Congress Working Committee.
