The sum of ages of 4 children born at intervals of 4 years each is 60. What is the age of the youngest child?

Solution:

Suppose the age of the youngest child = x years
Therefore, the ages of the other children = x + 4, x + 8 and x + 12 years
According to question
x + x + 4 + x + 8 + x + 12 = 60
⇒ 4x + 24 = 60
⇒ 4x = 60 – 24
⇒ x =

= 9 years
