A boat goes 15 km upstream and

10 1/2

km downstream in 3 hours 15 minutes. It goes 12 km upstream and 14 km downstream in 3 hours.
What is the speed of the boat in still water?

Solution:

Let the speed of boat in downstream = x
and the speed of boat in upstream = y
According to the question,

21/{2x}+15/y=3 1/4=13/4

...(i)

14/x+ 12/y=3

.....(ii)
On solving Eqs. (i) and (ii),
x = 14,y =6
Hence, the speed of boat in still water

={14+6}/2=20/2=10
