A mother is five times older than her daughter. After 5 years, she would be 3 times older than her daughter. Find the mother’s present age.

Validate

Solution:

Suppose the present age of daughter = x years
Therefore, the present age of mother = 5x years
According to question,
5x + 5 = 3 (x + 5)
⇒ 5x + 5 = 3x + 15
⇒ 5x – 3x = 15 – 5
⇒ 2x = 10
∴ x =

{10}/2

= 5
Present age of mother = 5x = 5 × 5 = 25 years
