Acid rain is caused by emissions of Sulfur Dioxide ($\mathit{S}{\mathit{O}}_2$) and Nitrogen Oxide ($\mathit{N}{\mathit{O}}_{\mathit{x}}$), which react with the water molecules in the atmosphere to produce acids. Emissions of $\mathit{S}{\mathit{O}}_2$ and $\mathit{N}{\mathit{O}}_{\mathit{x}}$ result from fossil fuel combustion. The chemicals in acid rain can cause paint to peel, corrosion of steel structures such as bridges, and erosion of stone statues.
