The ratio of the present ages of Sunita and Vinita is 4 : 5. Six years hence, the ratio of their ages will be 14 : 17. What will be the ratio of their ages 12 years hence ?

Solution:

Suppose, the present age of Sunita = 4x years
Present age of Vinita = 5x years
According to question

{4x+6}/{5x+6}

{14}/{17}

⇒ 17 (4x + 6) = 14 (5x + 6)
⇒ 68x + 102 = 70x + 84
⇒ 70x – 68x = 102 – 84
⇒ 2x = 18
∴ x =

{18}/2

= 9
Present age of Sunita = 4x
= 4 × 9 = 36 years
Present age of Vinita = 5x
= 5 × 9 = 45 years
After 12 years
Age of Sunita = 36 + 12 = 48
Age of Vinita = 45 + 12 = 57
∴ Required Ratio =

{48}/{57}

{16}/{19}

= 16 : 19
