The sum of the ages of two brothers, having a difference of 8 years between them, will double after 10 years. What is the ratio of the age of the younger brother to that of the elder brother ?

Validate

Solution:

Age of younger brother = x years
Age of elder brother = (x + 8) years
∴ After 10 years,
x + x + 8 + 20 = 2 (x + x + 8)
⇒ 2x + 28 = 4x + 16
⇒ 4x – 2x = 28 – 16
⇒ 2x = 12 ⇒ x =

{12}/2

= 6
∴ Required ratio = 6 : (6 + 8)
= 6 : 14 = 3 : 7
