When we cut an onion, we break its cells. releasing enzymes and amino acid sulfoxide chemicals from inside the cells react to produce sulfur gas. This gas releases from the onion and reacts with the natural water in our eye to form sulfuric acid, which brings the sensation and tears and has a strong smell.
