(c) The Rowlatt Act was passed to restraint fundamental rights such as the freedom of expression and strengthened the defence powers. Mahatma Gandhi felt that the government had no right to restrict the basic freedoms of people. He criticised this act as "devilish and tyrannical". Gandhiji told the people to observe April 1919 as a day of non-violent opposition to the Rowlatt Act.
