A vessel contains a mixture of water and milk in the ratio 5 : 11. How much part of the mixture must be drawn off and replaced with water so that the mixture is half water and half milk?

Solution:

(4) Let the quantity of the mixture be 16 litres of liquid.
Let x litre of this liquid be replaced with water.
Quantity of water in new mixture

=5- {5 x}/{16}+x

Quantity of milk in new mixture

=11- {11 x}/{16}

∴

5- {5 x}/{16}+x=11- {11 x}/{16}

⇒

80+11 x=176-11 x

⇒22 x=96

⇒ x= {48}/{11}

∴ Part of mixture that must be replaced

= {48}/{11} ÷ 16= {3}/{11}
