Alloy 1 contains zinc, copper and tin in the ratio 1 : 2 :3. Alloy 2 contains copper, tin and lead in ratio 4 : 5 : 3. Equal quantities of alloys 1 and 2 are mixed to form alloy 3. What is the percentage of lead in alloy 3?

Solution:

(4) Quantity of lead in alloy 1 = 0
Quantity of lead in alloy 2

=3/12=1/4

Since alloys 1 and 2 are mixed in equal quantities, the quantity of lead in alloy 3 will be 50% of that contained in alloy 2

=1/2×1/4=1/8

Value of

1/8

means that alloy 3 contains 12.5% of lead.
