According to the question,
a – b = 3 ...(i)
a${}^2$ – b${}^2$ = 39
⇒ (a + b) (a – b) = 39
⇒ $\mathit{a}+\mathit{b}=\frac{39}{\mathit{a}-\mathit{b}}=\mathrm{}\frac{39}{3}=13$
⇒ a + b = 13 ...(ii)
Adding equations (i) and (ii)
⇒2a = 16 a = 8
