Solution:

According to the question,
Part of the tank filled in

1 {h}=\;{1}/{x}

Part of the tank emptied in

1{h}=\;{1}/{y}

Part of the tank filled in 1h when both are opened

=\;{1}/{x}-\;{1}/{y}=\;{y-x}/{x y}

So, tank will be filled in

\;{x y}/{y-x} h
