Two school vans start from a house at an interval of 8 minutes and travel with a speed of 25 km/hr. With how much speed (km/hr.) should a woman coming from the opposite direction towards the house travel, to meet the vans at an interval of 4 minutes?

Solution:

(1) Distance covered by first
van in 8 minutes =

[{25× 8}/60]

km.

=10/3

km.
Let the speed of woman be x kmph.
Relative speed = (x + 25) kmph

∴ (x + 25) ×4/60 =10/3

⇒{x + 25}/15 =10/3

⇒ x + 25 =10/3×15 = 50

⇒ x = 50 – 25 = 25 kmph
