The average weight of 10 men is increased by 1.5 kg when one of the men who weights 68 kg is replaced by a new man. Find the weight of the new man.

Solution:

(1) Let the average weight of 10 men = y

∴{x_1 x_2 x_10}/10= y

∴x_1 + x_2 + ... + x_10 = 10y ...(1)

Let the weight of new man = P

∴{x_1 x_2 x_10-68 +P}/10

= (y + 1.5)

∴x_1 + x_2 + ... + x_10 – 68 + P

= 10y + 15
from eq. (1),
10y – 68 + P = 10y + 15
⇒ P – 68 = 15
∴ P = 68 + 15 = 83 kg.
