tan θ + cot θ = 5 On squaring both sides, ( tan θ + cot θ )^2 = 5^2

⇒tan^2θ+cot^2θ+2tan θ cot θ

= 25 [∵ tan θ cot θ =1]

⇒ tan^2θ+ cot^2 θ + 2 × 1 = 25

⇒ tan^2 θ + cot^2 θ

= 25 -2 = 23
