A merchant has 50 kg of sugar, part of which he sells at 8% gain and the rest at 18% . He gains 14% on the whole. Find the quantity sold at 18% profit.

Validate

Solution:

(1) Let the part of 8% profit is x By question,
8% of x + 18% of (50 – x)= 14% of 50 kg.

⇒{8x}/100+{(50-x) 18}/100= 5014/100

⇒8x + 900 – 18x = 700
⇒ –10x = –200
∴ x = 20
∴Required part = (50 – x) kg= (50 – 20) kg = 30 kg.
