Two positive whole numbers are such that the sum of the first and twice the second number is 8 and their difference is 2. The numbers are :

Solution:

Let the two numbers are x and y
So,

x + 2y = 8

… (i)

x – y = 2

… (ii)
Solving both equations

x = 4; y = 2

So, numbers are 4,2
