(4) The Supreme Court collegium, headed by CJI Dipak Misra, has selected Indu Malhotra as the first woman lawyer to be directly promoted as a judge of the Supreme Court (SC). She will be the 7th woman judge in the Supreme Court, since it was established 67 years ago, if her appointment goes through. Along with her, Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice KM Joseph has also been promoted as a Supreme Court judge. Currently, Justice R Banumathi is the only woman judge in the apex court. In 1989, Justice M Fathima Beevi became the first woman to be appointed as a judge of the apex court.
