Given:
x + 1/x = 1
Formula used:

(a + b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 + 2ab

Calculation:
x + 1/x = 1
Squaring both sides, we have –
⇒

x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2 = 1

After adding 4 on both side
⇒

x^2 + 1/x^2 + 2 + 4 = 1 + 4

x^2 + 1/x^2 + 6 = 5
