(1) A pinnately compound leaf is one in which the midrib (rachis) bears laterally a number of leaflets. The arrangement of leaflets is either alternate or opposite. These leaflets (called pinnule) form in rows along or on either side of the middle vein that's known as the rachis, which all form one leaf attached to the petiole or stem.
