A lady runs 12 km towards north, then 6 km towards south and then 8 km east. How far is she from her starting point and in which direction?

Solution:

She started from O and ends at C.
According to Pythagoras Theorem,

(OC)^2 = (OD)^2 + (CD)^2

⇒

(8)^2 + (6)^2

⇒ 64 + 36 = 100
and hence OC = 10 km (North–east)
