Chalukya king Pulakeshin II defeated Harshavardhana on the banks of River Narmada in 618 A.D.
Pulakeshin, who ruled from the Chalukyan capital of Badami,challenged Harsha’s conquests.
The Aihole inscription pronounces how the mighty Harsha lost his harsha (joy) when he suffered the humiliation of defeat. Pulakeshin entered into an agreement with Harsha, with the Narmada River chosen as the border between the Chalukya Empire and that of Harshavardhana.
