A man completes a journey in 8 hours. He covers half the distance at 40 km/hr and the rest at 60 km/hr. The length of the journey is

Solution:

Let the distance covered be x, time taken while travelling at 40 km/h be t₁ and time taken while travelling at 60 km/h be t₂.

\;\text " Then "\; \;{1}/{2} x=40 × t_{1} \;\text " and "\;

\;{1}/{2} x=60 × t_{2}

\;\text " So, "\; \;{t_{1}}/{t_{2}}=\;{3}/{2} . \;\text " since total time is "\; 8 \hours,

\;\text " so "\; t_{1}=\;{3}/{5} × 8=\;{24}/{5} \;\; \;\text " and "\;

{t}_{1}=\;{2}/{5} × 8=\;{16}/{5}

Length of journey

= x = 80×24/5 = 384 \km
