Find the ratio in which line 3x + 2y = 17 divides the line segment joined by points (2,5) and (5,2).

Solution:

Let the ratio be k : 1 then using section formula we have

X=\;{5 k+2}/{k+1}

and

Y=\;{2 k+2}/{k+1}

putting values of

in eqn

3 x+2 y

=17

we have

3(\;{5 k+2}/{k+1})+2(\;{2 k+5}/{k+1})=17

15 k+6+4 k+10=17 k+17

19 k+16=17 k+17

2 k=1 ⇒ k=\;{1}/{2}

∴

the ratio is 1: 2
