If he travels by car for 10 km and the remaining by train, he reaches office in

hours. Doing exactly the opposite, he reaches office in (t+ 0.5)hours. If the speed of the train and the car are 50 km/h and 40 km/h, respectively, find the distance he travels to reach his office.

Solution:

Let the distance travelled by train

=x {\km}

then

\;{10}/{40}+\;{x}/{50}= {t}

........ (i)
also

\;{10}/{50}+\;{x}/{40}=t+0.5

.........(ii)
Substituting value of eqn (1) in eqn (2) we get

\;{10}/{50}+\;{x}/{40}=\;{10}/{40}+\;{x}/{50}+0.5

40+5 x-50-4 x=100

⇒ \;\; x-10=100 ⇒ x=110

∴

distance travelled

=x+10

=110+10=120 {\km}
