Aestivation is summer sleep.
Many organisms, such as the snails do not find it comfortable in summer. They withdraw and lead a life with reduced BMR in a state of dormancy. Invertebrate and vertebrate animals are known to enter this state to avoid discomfort from high temperatures and the risk of desiccation. Both terrestrial and aquatic animals undergo aestivation.
