Two poles of heights 7 metres and 12 metres stand on a plane ground. If the distance between their feet is 12 metres, the distance between their tops is:

AB = 7 m
CD = 12 m
BC = AE = 12 m
DE = CD – CE
= CD – AB
= 12 – 7 = 5 m

AD^2 = AE^2 + DE^2

(12)^2 + (5)^2

= 144 + 25 = 169
∴ AD =

= 13 m
