Two men A and B started a job in which A was thrice as good as B and therefore took 60 days less than B to finish the job. How many days will they take to finish the job, if they start working together?

Solution:

(c) If time taken by A be x days,
then time taken by B = 3x days
∴ 3x – x = 60
⇒ 2x = 60
⇒ x = 30
Time taken by B = 90 days
∴ (A + B)’s 1 day’s work

{ 1 } /{ 30 } + { 1 } /{ 90 }

{ 3 + 1 }/ { 90 }

{ 4 }/ { 90 } = { 2 }/ { 45 }

∴ The work will be completed in

45/2

i.e.
