The average of four consecutive even numbers is 9. Find the largest number.

Solution:

(a) Let the consecutive even numbers are 2n, 2n + 2, 2n + 4 and 2n + 6
Average =

{2n+ 2n+ 2+ 2n+ 4+ 2n+ 6}/4

8n + 12 = 4 × 9 ⇒ n = 3
Hence, the numbers are 6, 8, 10 and 12.
Largest among them is 12.
