If the speed of a passenger train is enhanced with 10 km per hour, then it takes 3 hours less time to cover a distance of 360 km. Find the average speed of the train.

Solution:

Let the average speed of the train = x km/hr
According to the question,

{ 360 }/ { x } - { 360 }/ { x + 10 } = 3

⇒

{ 360 ( x + 10 - x ) } /{ x ( x + 10 ) } = 3

⇒

x ^ { 2 } + 10 x - 1200 = 0

⇒ (x + 40)(x – 30) = 0
⇒ x = – 40 or x = 30
∴ Required speed = 30 km/hr
