Rohan travels at 4mph in still water. If the velocity of the current is 2mph, it takes 4 hours to row to a place and come back. What is the distance (one side)travelled by Rohan?

Solution:

Let the distance be x miles
Speed upstream = 4 – 2 = 2mph
Speed downstream = 4 + 2 = 6mph
⇒

x/2+x/6

=4 ⇒ x2+x6=4 ⇒ 6x + 2x = 48
⇒ 8x = 48
⇒ x = 6 miles
∴ The distance travelled by Rohan is = 6 miles
