The costs of a pineapple and a watermelon are Rs. 7 and Rs. 5 respectively. Steve spends Rs. 38 on these fruits. The number of pineapples purchased by him is:

Solution:

Let the number of pineapple and watermelon be x and y.
Now, 7x + 5y = 38

∴y={38-7x}/5

It is clear that x and y will be whole numbers.
only x = 4 give the y as a whole number
Hence, number of pineapple = 4
