John gave one-fourth of the amount he had to James. James in turn gave half of what he received from John to Joseph. If the difference between the remaining amount with John and the amount received by Joseph is Rs. 500, how much money did James receive from John?

Validate

Solution:

Let the amount belonging to John be Rs. x
Then amount received by James = Rs.

x/ 4

and amount received by Joseph = Rs.

x/ 8

Now, remaining amount with John

= x - x/ 4 = \Rs. {3x} /4

Again,

{3x}/4-x/8=500

⇒{5x}/8=500

∴x=\Rs.800

Hence, the amount received by James

= \Rs.x/4=\Rs.800/4=\Rs.200
