On Children's Day, sweets were to be equally distributed among 175 children in a school. 35 children were absent on that day and therefore each child got 4 sweets extra. How many sweets are available for distribution in total?

Solution:

Let the number of sweets to be given to a student = x
Now, 175x = 140 (x + 4)
⇒175x – 140x = 560
∴

x = 560/35 = 16

Total number of sweets available = 175 × 16 = 2800
