A certain sum of money lent out on simple interest amounts to Rs. 1760 in 2 years and to Rs. 2000 in 5 years. Find the sum.

Solution:

Interest for 3 years= Rs. 2000 – Rs. 1760 = Rs. 240
∴ Interest for 1 year = Rs.

240/3

= Rs. 80
And interest for 2 years = Rs. 80 × 2 = Rs. 160
∴ Principal = Rs. 1760 – Rs. 160 = Rs. 1600
